Frequently Asked Questions About Hair Extensions

Hair extensions are a popular way to add length, volume, and versatility to your hair. Whether you’re considering extensions for the first time or are a seasoned user looking for more information, below we will answer all your questions. From costs and maintenance to potential risks and types of extensions, we’ve got you covered.

1. What Are Hair Extensions?

Hair extensions are strands of hair that are added to your natural hair to increase its length and volume. They can be made from either synthetic or human hair and come in various forms, including clip-ins, tape-ins, sew-ins, and more.

2. What Types of Hair Extensions Are Available?

There are several types of hair extensions, each with its own application method and benefits:

  • Clip-In Extensions: These are temporary extensions that you can clip into your hair and remove at the end of the day. They are ideal for special occasions or for those who want a non-permanent solution.
  • Tape-In Extensions: These involve adhesive strips that attach to your natural hair. They are semi-permanent and typically last 6-8 weeks with proper care.
  • Sew-In (Weave) Extensions: These extensions are sewn into braids in your natural hair. They are more permanent and suitable for thicker hair types.
  • Micro-Bead Extensions: Also known as micro-ring extensions, these involve small beads that clamp the extensions to your natural hair. They are adjustable and can last for several months.
  • Fusion (Keratin Bond) Extensions: These use a keratin-based adhesive to bond the extensions to your natural hair. They are durable and can last up to six months with proper care.

3. How Much Do Hair Extensions Cost?

The cost of hair extensions varies widely depending on the type, quality, and length of the extensions, as well as the application method. Here’s a general price range:

  • Clip-In Extensions: $100 – $500
  • Tape-In Extensions: $200 – $600 (plus installation fees)
  • Sew-In Extensions: $150 – $500 (plus installation fees)
  • Micro-Bead Extensions: $300 – $800 (plus installation fees)
  • Fusion Extensions: $300 – $1,500 (plus installation fees)

It’s important to note that these prices can vary based on the salon and the stylist’s expertise.

4. How Long Do Hair Extensions Last?

The lifespan of hair extensions depends on the type and how well they are maintained:

  • Clip-In Extensions: 6-12 months (with proper care)
  • Tape-In Extensions: 6-8 weeks (can be reused with new adhesive)
  • Sew-In Extensions: 6-8 weeks
  • Micro-Bead Extensions: 3-6 months
  • Fusion Extensions: 3-6 months

Proper maintenance, such as using the right products and following aftercare instructions, can significantly extend the life of your extensions.

5. How Should I Care for My Hair Extensions?

Proper care is crucial to maintaining the quality and longevity of your hair extensions:

  • Washing: Use sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners. Wash your hair 2-3 times a week to avoid buildup.
  • Brushing: Use a wide-tooth comb or a brush designed for extensions. Always brush from the ends up to the roots to avoid tangling.
  • Styling: Minimize the use of heat styling tools. When using them, always apply a heat protectant.
  • Sleeping: Braid your hair or tie it in a loose ponytail to prevent tangling while you sleep.

6. Are Hair Extensions Damaging to Natural Hair?

When applied and maintained correctly, hair extensions should not cause significant damage to your natural hair. However, improper application, overuse, or neglecting aftercare can lead to issues such as:

  • Tension Alopecia: Caused by excessive tension on the hair roots, leading to hair loss.
  • Breakage: Overuse of heat styling tools or not properly detangling extensions can cause hair breakage.
  • Scalp Irritation: Some people may experience irritation or allergic reactions to the adhesives or materials used in the extensions.

Always consult with a professional stylist to ensure proper application and care.

7. Can I Color My Hair Extensions?

Human hair extensions can be colored just like your natural hair, but it’s best to have this done by a professional stylist to avoid damage. Synthetic hair extensions cannot be colored as the dye won’t take to the fibers.

8. How Do I Choose the Right Hair Extensions?

Choosing the right hair extensions depends on your hair type, lifestyle, and desired look. Here are a few tips:

  • Match Your Hair Texture: Ensure the extensions match your natural hair texture for a seamless blend.
  • Consider Your Lifestyle: If you lead an active lifestyle, opt for extensions that are low-maintenance.
  • Consult a Professional: A stylist can help you choose the best type and length of extensions to achieve your desired look.

9. How Often Should I Visit the Salon for Maintenance?

For most types of hair extensions, it’s recommended to visit the salon every 6-8 weeks for maintenance. This includes adjusting the extensions, reapplying adhesive, or removing and reinstalling the extensions.

10. What Are the Potential Risks of Hair Extensions?

While hair extensions are generally safe, there are a few potential risks:

  • Allergic Reactions: Some people may be allergic to the adhesives or materials used in the extensions.
  • Scalp Issues: Improper installation or poor maintenance can lead to scalp irritation or infection.
  • Hair Damage: Overuse or incorrect application can cause hair breakage or loss.

To minimize these risks, always have your extensions applied by a trained professional and follow their aftercare instructions carefully.

Hair extensions can be a fantastic way to enhance your natural hair, offering added length, volume, and versatility. 2. Versatility in Styling: Hair extensions open up a world of styling possibilities. From intricate updos to cascading waves, you can experiment with different hairstyles that might not be possible with your natural hair alone.

  4. Damage-Free Glamour: Unlike other hair treatments that can damage your natural hair, extensions offer a non-invasive way to enhance your look. With proper application and care, extensions can help protect your natural hair from styling damage.

  4. Micro-Bead Extensions: These extensions are attached using small beads, which are clamped to the natural hair. They are reusable and can be adjusted as your natural hair grows.

Q&A with Our Stylists

Q&A with Our Stylists: Your Hair Questions Answered

At Savvy Hair Artistry, we believe that the key to gorgeous hair lies in understanding your unique hair needs and having access to professional advice. That’s why we’ve gathered some of the most frequently asked questions from our clients and asked our expert stylists to share their insights. Read on to discover tips, tricks, and advice from the best in the business. And remember, if you have any questions of your own, feel free to submit them for our next Q&A session!

1. How Can I Make My Hair Grow Faster and Healthier?

Answer from Chloe, Senior Stylist: “Healthy hair growth starts from the inside out. Ensure you have a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly those like biotin, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids. Regular trims every 6-8 weeks can prevent split ends and breakage, which helps in maintaining length. Also, minimize heat styling and use heat protectants when you do style your hair. Regular scalp massages can also stimulate blood flow to the hair follicles, promoting growth.”

2. What Are the Best Products for Curly Hair?

Answer from Kalissa, Colour Specialist: “For curly hair, hydration is key. Look for sulfate-free shampoos and rich, moisturizing conditioners. Leave-in conditioners and curl creams help define curls and reduce frizz. I highly recommend using a microfiber towel or a cotton t-shirt to dry your hair to minimize friction and frizz. Products like leave-in conditioners with shea butter or oils like argan oil can be great for adding moisture and shine.”

3. How Can I Prevent My Hair Color from Fading?

Answer from Taleah, Managing Director: “To prevent color fading, use color-safe shampoos and conditioners that are free from sulfates and parabens. Wash your hair with cool water, as hot water can strip the color. Try to limit washing your hair to 2-3 times a week and use dry shampoo in between washes. Additionally, UV protection for hair is just as important as it is for skin, so consider using products with UV filters or wearing a hat when you’re in the sun for extended periods.”

4. What’s the Best Way to Deal with Dandruff?

Answer from Kalissa, Colour Specialist: “Dandruff can be caused by several factors, including dry skin, oily skin, and sensitivity to hair products. Using a gentle, anti-dandruff shampoo that contains ingredients like zinc pyrithione or ketoconazole can help control flaking. Make sure to rinse thoroughly, as residue can exacerbate dandruff. Regular exfoliation of the scalp can also help remove dead skin cells. If over-the-counter treatments don’t work, consider visiting a dermatologist.”

5. How Can I Achieve a Salon-Quality Blowout at Home?

Answer from Taleah, Managing Director: “Start with clean, towel-dried hair and apply a heat protectant spray. Use a round brush to lift the roots and smooth the hair as you blow-dry. Always point the nozzle of your dryer down the hair shaft to minimize frizz and create a smooth finish. Work in sections, and once your hair is dry, you can set it with a blast of cool air to lock in shine. Finish with a light hairspray or a serum to tame any flyaways.”

6. What Are the Best Hairstyles for Fine Hair to Add Volume?

Answer from Chloe, Senior Stylist: “For fine hair, it’s all about creating the illusion of volume. Shorter cuts like bobs and pixies can make hair appear fuller. Layering is also a great technique to add movement and body. When styling, use volumizing mousses and root-lifting sprays. Blow-drying your hair upside down can help create lift at the roots. Avoid heavy conditioners that can weigh hair down and opt for lightweight, volumizing products.”

7. How Do I Maintain My Hair Extensions?

Answer from Chloe, Senior Stylist: “Hair extensions require regular maintenance to keep them looking their best. Use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo and a moisturizing conditioner. When brushing, start from the tips and work your way up to avoid tangling. Avoid applying heat directly to the bonds or tapes of the extensions. Sleep with your hair in a loose braid or ponytail to prevent tangling. Regular salon visits for adjustments and maintenance are crucial for the longevity of your extensions.”

8. What Can I Do to Repair Damaged Hair?

Answer from Chloe, Senior Stylist:“Start by trimming off the damaged ends to prevent further splitting. Use protein treatments to strengthen your hair and moisturizing masks to restore hydration. Minimize the use of heat styling tools and always use a heat protectant. Incorporate leave-in conditioners and oils to provide ongoing moisture. Avoid harsh chemical treatments and opt for more natural styling methods. Consistency is key, so make these treatments part of your regular hair care routine.”

9. How Often Should I Wash My Hair?

Answer from Taleah, Managing Director:  “The frequency of washing depends on your hair type and lifestyle. For oily hair, washing every other day might be necessary, while dry hair can go longer between washes. For most hair types, 2-3 times a week is sufficient. Over-washing can strip your hair of its natural oils, leading to dryness and potential damage. Use a dry shampoo to extend the time between washes and maintain a fresh look.”

10. What’s the Best Way to Transition to Natural Gray Hair?

Answer from Taleah, Managing Director:  “Transitioning to natural gray can be a beautiful and empowering process. Gradually blending highlights and lowlights with your natural color can make the transition smoother. Regular trims will help remove dyed ends as your natural color grows in. Use purple shampoos and conditioners to keep gray hair looking vibrant and free from yellow tones. Embrace the process and consider working with a stylist who understands the nuances of transitioning to gray.”

Looking After Hair Extensions

Proper care and maintenance are essential to keep your hair extensions looking their best and ensure their longevity. Here are some tips to help you take care of your hair extensions:

  1. Brushing: Use a wide-toothed comb or a special extension brush to detangle your hair extensions gently. Start from the ends and work your way up to the roots to avoid causing any unnecessary tension or pulling on the extensions.
  2. Washing: Wash your hair extensions sparingly, about once every 1-2 weeks, or as needed. Use a sulfate-free and extension-friendly shampoo and conditioner. Avoid applying conditioner directly to the roots to prevent weighing down the extensions. Rinse thoroughly and gently squeeze out excess water before drying.
  3. Drying: Air drying is the best option for hair extensions. Avoid using excessive heat from blow dryers, curling irons, or straighteners as it can damage the hair and the bonds. If you must use heat styling tools, apply a heat protectant spray before use and use the lowest heat setting possible.
  4. Sleeping: Before going to bed, brush your hair extensions to remove any tangles and tie them up in a loose braid or ponytail to prevent them from tangling or matting while you sleep. You can also use a silk or satin pillowcase or a hair cap to minimize friction and reduce tangles.
  5. Avoiding harsh chemicals: Minimize exposure to chlorine, saltwater, and other harsh chemicals as they can damage the hair extensions. If you’re planning to swim, it’s best to wear a swimming cap or keep your hair extensions out of the water.
  6. Styling products: Use lightweight and extension-friendly styling products to avoid weighing down the extensions. Avoid applying products directly to the roots or bonds as they can cause build-up or weaken the adhesive.
  7. Maintenance appointments: Regularly visit a professional hairstylist who specializes in hair extensions for maintenance appointments. They can check the condition of the extensions, trim any split ends, and ensure that the bonds or attachments are secure.

Remember, different types of hair extensions may require specific care instructions, so it’s always best to follow the guidelines provided by the manufacturer or your hairstylist. If you would like a free consultation to discuss your hair extensions and the maintenance of them get in touch today by giving us a call or sending us a message.

5 Reasons to get into hair extensions now!

Hair Extensions

Hair extensions are a hot topic in hair styling — and for good reason! They can make a world of difference to any head of hair.

If you’ve been considering enlisting some help for your luscious locks to shine even brighter, you may have come across the option of hair extensions.

But what exactly can hair extensions do to enhance or change your regular look? To help you decide if they’re the right choice for you, we’ve put together a list of the best reasons to try hair extensions for yourself.

Change up your style

Savvy Hair Extentions

Itching for a new look? One of the best things about hair extensions is that they can transform your look in minutes. That means no more ‘awkward lengths’ or waiting for your hair to grow out to get the style you want.

We’re talking instant beachy waves and bouncy curls, whatever your natural hair length!

The hair extensions we proudly use — Great Lengths — are tape or keratin bond extensions made from natural human hair. So, once they’re in they can be styled in just about any way you’d style your own hair.

They’re also available in a range of lengths and a whole spectrum of tones. That way, you can pick out a set of extensions that subtly enhance your natural look, or go big with an eye-catching ombré or two-tone style.

What’s even better is that you can change up your style 100% guilt free. We’ve purposefully chosen to use Great Lengths hair extensions because they are sourced with donor consent, with money going back into the communities. It’s a win win.

Volume for days

Savvy Hair Extensions

Hair extensions can make a world of difference in the volume department. Just a handful of well-fitted tapes can turn even the thinnest and most delicate heads of hair into a vivacious mane.

The secret to enjoying the volume-enhancing powers of hair extensions for yourself is pretty simple. You need high-quality, natural hair extensions and an experienced hand to fit them.

Great Lengths hair extension tapes have a modular design, so they sit naturally and fall with the rest of your hair. That means your extensions will be seamlessly integrated into your hair, whether you wear it free and flowing or in a thick, swishing ponytail.

Savvy Hair ExtensionsAnd because the Great Lengths hair is from Indian Temple hair, it has a gorgeous natural wave, giving immediate body to thin, or lifeless hair.

While high-quality hair extensions are almost always made from real human hair, the best out there are known as remy hair. This is hair that is cut directly from a donor, rather than collected after it falls, which means all the cuticles face the same direction as your natural hair. And you guessed it, Great Lengths ticks all those boxes.

The benefit of this level of quality and care is that your remy extensions blend naturally into your own hair, maintain the same shine and will stay silky smooth much longer than lower-quality extensions.

Because they’re made from virgin hair, remy hair extensions can also be dyed, tinted and chemically treated the same as your own hair. Great Lengths offers remy hair extensions in an enormous range of tints to match your natural colour, as well as some more specialised options to throw some highlights and depth to your style. And with over 100 natural colours to choose from, you know you’ll find exactly the match you’re looking for.

Long-lasting and low maintenance

Savvy Hair Extensions

High-quality hair extensions certainly are volume, length and style on-demand, but that doesn’t mean they just play for a day. If you look after them well, Great Lengths hair extensions can last between 4-6 months thanks to the keratin bonds on the natural hair.

What’s more, caring for your hair extensions couldn’t be simpler. Since they’re made from real human hair, you look after them pretty much exactly how you would your own hair. So beautiful damage-free hair is yours for almost 6 months, without high maintenance.

Safe and easy to wear

High-quality tape hair extensions can be used on most natural hair types. As long as your hair is healthy and at least more than 5cm in length, you’re eligible for a total style transformation!

They’re also perfectly safe to use and won’t damage your hair when they’re skillfully applied by an experienced professional.

Once they’re in, tape hair extensions can handle just about anything that you’d put your normal hair through — whether you’re swimming regularly, exercising every day or enjoying the sauna every now and then.

So, think hair extensions might be the right choice for your next style upgrade? Drop in for a consultation and we can help you decide what works best for you.

Five Tips and tricks to get more Volume for Short Hair and Fine Hair

Do you ever start off the morning with hair volume for days, only for it to flatten out as the hours pass by? If you have short hair and just can’t seem to maintain lift and volume, we’ve got five expert tips for you to try that will infuse life back into your hair.

1. Hair extensions with volumizer for added thickness

Hair extensions are the fastest, easiest way to add thickness and length to your hair in as little as five minutes. For short hair, be sure to choose a set that is thicker than your actual hair type to ensure that the extensions blend in seamlessly with the shorter ends of your hair. Savvy Hair can point you in the right direction to order the perfect extension you as well as providing you with a hair tutorial on how to put them in.

Add in a volumizer

For that mega volume, we usually like to take it a step further by adding in a Volumizer Weft, this is a single, 4-clip weft, which adds 45g of added volume to your hair. When wearing the Volumizer Weft. Simply stack this this weft onto the weft clipped in at the widest part of your head. Stacking the wefts in this way will reduce bulk at the back of your head, only leaving you with thick, volumized, cascading hair.

2. Dry Shampoo

There’s a reason why your hair looks fluffy and voluminous when you first wash it, flattening gradually until you wash it again. Our scalp produces natural oils called sebum, which protect your hair and scalp, keeping them moisturized. These natural oils also protect the scalp from bacterial infection, forming a barrier from disease carrying bacteria. While sebum provides loads of benefits for the hair and scalp, a downside to these natural oils is that they weigh down the hair at the roots, resulting in flat, lifeless hair until your next wash. A solution? Dry shampoo.

Dry shampoo is a quick, effective way to banish greasy roots and oily hair, reviving style and volume instantly. Simply separate your hair section by section, sprinkle in a bit of dry shampoo, rub the product into your roots, and watch your hair come back to life. For an extra bit of zhoosh, flip your hair upside down, and apply dry shampoo to the roots underneath your head as well. We have a selection of the perfect dry shampoo for your hair needs.

3. Texturizing spray

Texturizing spray is our little secret for that tousled, model-off-duty look. Whether you’re wearing your hair short or with extensions clipped in, texturizing spray adds an airiness to the hair for that perfectly undone finish. Use your fingers to feather through your hair and spray the texturizing spray from the midshaft to ends, avoiding the roots. Scrunch the hair, and you’re done!

Our favorite texturizing spray is the Savage Panache from loreal Professional, gives you the perfect volume all day that leaves your hair looking like a 10 all day long. If you’re looking to splurge a bit more, opt for the Pureology wind tossed Texturizing Spray, which preserves moistures in the hair while adding shine and definition.

4. Change your part

Your hair strands eventually get used to the same part, falling flat over time. In order to maintain volume at the roots, it’s a good idea to switch up your hair part every now and again. If you usually part your hair in the middle, try flipping your hair to the side. If you usually part your hair on the side, part your hair on the opposite side, and watch your hair instantly lift itself.

5. Tease your hair

Teasing your hair forces the roots to stand upright, adding instant lift and volume. Using either a teasing brush or large paddle brush, (which we sell at Savvy Hair Artistry )separate your hair section by section, backcombing the hair at the roots. Finish off with some light hold hair spray, then lightly brush over the top of your hair to smoothen down any tangles.

Staying Home Through COVID-19 – Tips and Tricks

Staying home is the new Saturday night, brunch with the girls, 9 to 5—it is our new norm, for now.

With stay at home orders across the country, we are connecting online now more than ever. FaceTime, Zoom, House Party, and Google Hangouts video conferencing is how we are getting work done, catching up with friends and family, starting new hobbies, and for some, even dating.

While sweats and top buns may be your go-to lately, it doesn’t mean you can’t look cute on FaceTime calls. Whether chatting with your boss, having a glass of wine with friends, or going on a virtual date there are plenty of ways to up your video call looks.

Savvy has put together our top tips on how to look good on FaceTime.

The set-up

Find a comfortable place in your home to set-up your work and conferencing space. While staying in bed may seem appealing all day, experts say it’s best to separate the space where you sleep and where you work.

Ergonomically speaking sitting on a bed with no back support may not be comfortable, so find a space and chair that can help you get comfortable and conduct your calls with ease.

Raise your camera or computer to eye level—this can easily be done with a desk-riser, or a shoe box or books. Just like taking a photo, this is all about angles, you don’t want your co-workers or your friends to look at you from under your chin or nose as this casts an unflattering shadow and no one wants that.

With your camera at eye-level, you can look directly into it just like you would when participating in an in-person meeting. You can always tell who on the call is looking at themselves and not the rest of the group. How to impress your boss and peers? Easy tip: Eyes up, talk directly to the camera making “eye contact” it looks professional and also gives off the most natural view of you.

Don’t forget, posture up. While your friends may take you as you are, you don’t want to be slouched or lying back on a work call. Save sloth mode for after-work calls. Having your camera on eye level will help you to straighten up and you may find less pressure on your lower back after a day’s work of sitting.

The background is the Key

The key to how to look good on FaceTime is to ensure the attention is rightly on you and the best way is to make sure your background is not distracting. A plain wall or one with few clean photos or items in the background is best. If you’re in your bedroom, makes sure it’s clean and tidy!

Lighting is your best friend

Just like the angles of your camera, do not situate yourself directly under an overhead light—again, this casts unflattering lighting and can wash your background out typically creating a plain Jane or that hooded villain look.

Natural light is great during the day when possible and be sure the light is on your face. Putting your back to the window or light again casts a shadow and your colleagues or friends won’t be able to see you. It may also be time to invest in a ring light. They’re not just for influencers or TikTok-obsessed creators. There are many sizes of ring lights now available including ones that can fit directly onto your mobile phone or your laptop camera. This brightens your appearance and darkens the background, ensuring the focus is on you. A desk lamp can also help if properly situated around your camera, but the best way to find your ideal lighting is to test your video ahead of time, experiment with placement and lighting type to find what works for your space and your angles.

Plus, if you do get a ring light, you’ll also up your selfie game ten-fold. If it works for the Kardashians, it can work for you!

Easy makeup and hair for your next FaceTime or Zoom call

These are the two things you have probably ignored over self-isolation, along with other things such as bras, and your makeup bags. We’re not saying you need a full face and a blowout every day, or even that you should follow your daily beauty and hair routines (unless you want to and it brings you joy, please do you). If you want to master how to look good on video, there are simple makeup tips to help freshen up your natural beauty and will absolutely help you slay your call.

A little concealer goes a long way. A little concealer under the eyes for a brighter look. To make your eyes pop a bit more, apply mascara. For those who prefer defined eyes, apply some eyeliner and call it a day. As you’ve already learned our trick of speaking right into the camera, putting emphasis on bright, rested eyes will make you look great (and put together).

You can also use concealer or powdered foundation to even out any discolouration or redness in the skin. With the right lighting, a smooth complexion will even make your video callers think you have a filter on (and if you do, good on you!)

If you can’t be bothered with foundation but still want a little colour, pop on a light highlighter on your cheeks or go for a light sweep of bronzer. Just because you haven’t left the house in weeks doesn’t mean you have to forego that sun-kissed look completely. What’s makeup for anyway?

Now it’s time to talk hair. Let’s be honest, when’s the last time you brushed it? It wouldn’t hurt to pull it out of that scrunchie once in a while and running a brush through your locks to ensure now tangling. Having your hair up all the time also increases breakage and split ends and we know you’re not trying to come out of quarantine with less hair.

A sleek ponytail always looks professional but wear your hair down once in a while too. If you don’t want to go through the work of blow-drying, all good. Use a butterfly clip or hair tie for a half-up look, no one is going to see the back of your head so do as you please to keep the hair up.

If you typically wear clip in hair extensions, put them on for your FaceTime calls for instant volume and length. If your hair feels or looks a little dull, clip in hair extensions will easily give you some new oomph. Perfect for work Zoom calls or FaceTime date nights.

Another easy styling trick with or without clip in hair extensions is Accessories! Put on a headband or tie a scarf on to give your hair to give that fleek look

Plan a night out or girls’ night online and get all your friends glammed up, another excuse or rather, opportunity to do your hair and makeup and have fun with it.

While working and playing from home is our new norm, for now, technology is helping us stay connected. Reach out to those you haven’t spoken to in a while, check in with people in your street or family members, and don’t forget to be kind to yourself too. Dress up everyone now again or throw on a bold red lip just for fun—this can make a world of a difference to how you feel, which in turn will show through your camera. Love Savvy Team XX
